Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that the Joker 2 release date will be 4th October 2024 and the story of Arthur Flake as the Joker will continue in its sequel. In the first movie, we saw a nobody take control of the entire Gotham city following a few bad incidents that happened in his life. Joker (2019) explained that Arthur Flake, aka Joker, was the son of Bruce Way’s father, Thomas Wayne. It was kind of difficult to imagine if the Batman and Joker characters were like brothers. The above 2:24 minutes long Joker 2 teaser shows Arthur Flake where we last saw him. In the first intro, Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Flake is still stoic and very much emotionless about the whole chaos he caused. Nonetheless, we expect this same behavior from him. This time, Arthur Flake notices Harleen Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga, who appears praying along with other people. Their eyes click at first, and they notice each other; one is a prisoner, and the other is a normal female who likely believes in a freedom and hope.
After that, we hear a monologue about using music to balance fractures within ourselves. Lady Gaga’s portrayal of a person who has done nothing in her life seems to be attracted to the Joker. She seems all-impressed by his achievements regardless of how cruel they were. Unlike the previous versions we saw of Joker and Harley Quinn meeting each other in Batman: The Animated Series, Rocksteady’s Arkham Games, Suicide Squad (2016) and in comic books, this one looks different and follows the world in which Arthur Flake’s character lives.

In Joker 2, Arthur Flake and Harleen Quinzel both get together after a few interactions and kickstart their love story. Harleen asks Arthur to get out of the place they are in, and they dance on the street, imagining themselves on a stage. From that point onwards, we see Joker and herself in a studio with the “Joker & Harley” name which hints at something. Maybe they are called on a show by someone seeking for views or they may have started their show.
In the whole trailer, we hardly see the chaotic and energetic Harley Quinn like we have seen in the Suicide Squad, played by Margot Robbie. Margot Robbie looked like Harley Quinn, acted like her and dressed like her. She made the long-known popular character of a henchgirl of the Joker come to life from cartoons. However, in this trailer, Lady Gaga appears more organized, calm, methodical and likely according to the era when the movie is set, which might be the 1980s or 1990s.

In the Joker 2 Folie à Deux, Arthur Flake appears to have found his purpose in life with the arrival of Harley Quinn; he says, “I am not alone anymore”. In the movie, we expect this point to reach after their frequent intervals and intimate moments together. We did not get this same treatment of both these characters in Suicide Squad; in fact, the Joker in that movie, played by Jared Leto, was not that popular. Some theories say that he may be the one Robin who worked with Batman until the real Joker turned him into such a monster, but we cannot know for sure.
In the movie, both the duo seem to raise havoc, destabilizing the system, bombing and burning places – the usual stuff we love about Joker and Harley Quinn when they meet. However, this time, the trailer shows less personal struggles and more about anarchy and chaos. But it is for sure that they both have crossed personal limits and become free from the shackles of the society that kept them captive or controlled in certain areas.
What does ‘Folie à Deux’ mean?
Folie à Deux is a French phrase used to describe the “folly of two”. When two people start believing in the same delusional, imaginary and untrue ideas or concepts, they become known as “Folie à Deux”; in this case, it is for Arthur Falek’s Joker and Harley Quinn.
After Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the comic book supervillain might come very close to us. However, the story of the last Joker (2018) movie was focused on Arthur Flake’s struggles with mental illness, and the upcoming Joker 2 Folie à Deux movie appears to be giving him and Harley freedom and purpose. But still fingers are crossed to not see another less needed sequel by the studio for cash-grab. We have had those before, and it makes us question, “Why did they even make this movie?”.
